TC3 – 100 Weeks And Still
in Limbo
Major rally Monday 30 July
TC3 demand
immediate action
TC3 Residents Group has called for
action at a, mass rally this Monday outside Christchurch
City Council, Worcester Street, coinciding with the release
of the CBD blue print release.
This Monday,
Christchurch’s blue print for the recovery of the CBD is
unveiled. This signals an important milestone for the CBD.
The need for a vibrant and economically viable city is
acknowledged and desired by all. Yet the disparity between
the recovery of the CBD and the suburbs is unfathomable.
The suburbs have been seriously neglected and whilst
committed and continued energy has been spent developing a
blue print for the city, the suburbs decay further as no
action is taken and the plight of its residents continue to
be ignored. We demand the same level of commitment and
energy that has been dedicated to our CBD to be applied to
the recovery of our communities. The city skyline is filled
with cranes but there is little if any action to be found in
TC3. Whilst the 100 day blue print is released, we in TC3
have been in limbo for 100 weeks and continue to wait.
“It is difficult to understand the importance
placed on a roof for a stadium when the roof over our own
head is so uncertain. It is heartbreaking that our elderly
in TC3 wait, knowing that their homes will probably not be
fixed in their lifetime and yet a convention centre is
identified as a priority. When did commercial necessity
become more important than people? Why cannot the suburban
recovery take place at a rate that parallels that of the
CBD? This is not fair or right and begs the question why
are the urgent housing needs of its citizens placed at the
forefront of this city’s recovery efforts”, says
Hider
There are 28,000 homes in TC3, with an estimated
10,000 having significant foundation damage and 4,000
needing to be rebuilt. For these residents they are trying
to rebuild shattered lives in shattered homes – yet no one
is providing a blue print for their recovery. It is this
disparity that we call to be addressed and rectified
urgently.
The rally will start at 5.30pm Christchurch
City Council Building, Worcester Street entry, Monday 30
July.
