Heritage Christchurch Wins Canterbury Heritage Award

Heritage Christchurch has been named a winner in the Canterbury Heritage Awards 2012 announced at a ceremony in front of an audience of Christchurch heritage advocates on Thursday 13 September at St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru.

The Canterbury Heritage Awards recognise excellence in heritage retention and conservation, heritage tourism and education within the public and private sector and promotes the values of best practice heritage retention and conservation to the wider community.

The Heritage Christchurch Old Government Building (OGB) was named equal winner of the Ceres NZ Seismic Award along with The Malthouse (Malthouse Theatre Trust).

“We are delighted to receive this wonderful award and proud to operate such an enduring and special heritage building. We are very much looking forward to welcoming guests back to the hotel next year when we will again be operating our OGB suite accommodation, Font café and bar, Maddison’s restaurant, plus meeting facilities,” says Heritage Christchurch’s general manager Gary Jarvis.

The OGB, designed by Joseph Clarkson Maddison and opened in 1913 is registered as a Category One Building on the Historic Places Trust Register and listed as a Group One Historic Place on the Christchurch City Council district plan.

The building was previously awarded the Christchurch Heritage Trust Built Heritage Award in 2010 by the Christchurch Heritage Charitable Trust.

The OGB houses luxury self contained suites, Heritage Christchurch’s Maddison’s restaurant and Font café bar, plus, meeting facilities for up to 50 people. Website www.heritagehotels.co.nz .
