Work to improve SH33 between Paengaroa and Rotorua

Work to improve safety and reduce travel times along SH33 between Paengaroa and Rotorua starts Friday
Road works to improve safety and reduce travel times along a section of the highway between Paengaroa and Rotorua on SH33 will start this Friday (2 November), says the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
The road works will be undertaken by Higgins contractors who will realign a series of curves along SH33 approximately half way between Paengaroa and Rotorua.
The series of curves known as the ‘Sun Valley Curves’ in the Pareteiro area, is a historic crash ‘black spot’ says the NZTA’s Bay of Plenty state highways manager, Brett Gliddon. Mr Gliddon says the series of curves will be straightened which will benefit users of this road by improving safety, reducing travel times and will make the movement of freight to the Port of Tauranga more efficient.
Mr Gliddon says a passing lane will also be installed to enable motorists travelling towards Rotorua from Paengaroa to overtake safely.
The project is estimated to cost $3.6 million and is expected to be completed by March 2014 with Rotorua District Council overseeing the works as the NZTA’s project partner for the Rotorua area.
During the construction process minor delays can be expected as traffic will pass through the construction zone.
To keep up with the progress of this project a newsletter will be available via email, you can subscribe to it by emailing sunvalley@rdc.govt.nz. Alternatively, you can visit our website www.nzta.govt.nz; to find out the latest on our current road conditions call 0800 4HIGHWAYS (0800 4 4449).
