Hospice West Auckland lights up for Christmas

Hospice West Auckland is holding a fun, free, family Christmas event on Sunday December 2 from 7.30 – 9.30pm.

‘Light Up Hospice’ is an annual celebration and remembrance evening held outside Hospice House at 52 Beach Road, Te Atatu Peninsula, Auckland.

The event celebrates Christmas, brings the community together and remembers those we have lost throughout the year. It also helps people understand Hospice and the work it does in the West Auckland area.

The event has been running for several years, and over a thousand people join together each year to watch the beautiful fairy lights get turned on over Hospice House as the sun sets.

Families, neighbours, friends and children gather with picnic rugs and beach chairs to watch the free entertainment unfold.

This year the line-up features some exceptional West Auckland talent including everyone’s favourite westie, comedian Ewen Gilmour.

Popular award-winning R&B duo Adeaze will woo the crowd with their soulful tunes, and Waitakere Voices will sing traditional Christmas carols. The Trusts Waitakere Auckland Brass Band, a Swiss style carnival band, Chinese dancers, singer Lisa Crawley, a Kapa Haka group, a Chinese Dragon and Belly Dancers will also perform.

There will be face-painting and a bouncy castle for the children, and Father Christmas himself is rumoured to be making an appearance.

A festival atmosphere will be created with the food vendors and the entertainment that will weave through the crowd.

For those people who are missing someone special at Christmas there are opportunities to remember those who are no longer with us. ‘Dove Blessings’ provide a special opportunity to release a dove into the sky, remembrance candles will glow in the night sky, and people can tie meaningful fabric onto a musical staff in a special installation called ‘musical notes’.

Hospice West Auckland will also be launching their annual fundraising drive ‘Christmas Stars’ at the event. When donating to Hospice, people can write a special message to an absent loved one and hang it on a Christmas tree.

Food, remembrance candles and raffle tickets will be able to be purchased at the event.
