Countdown presents Waikids with $144,774 towards hospital equipment
Thanks to tireless fundraising efforts from staff at Countdown supermarkets, Waikato DHB will provide children and families with $144,774 worth of new hospital equipment.
The generous donation was presented to Waikids (Waikato children and youth service) staff as a result of the nation-wide Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal, which has raised more than $1.2 million across the country this year.
Countdown area manager Karl Wareham praised Waikato for being the top fundraising area in the country at $50,000 ahead of the nearest area group; an effort that nurse manager Janet Bland said “helps Waikids tremendously”.
The money donated to Waikids will go towards sophisticated monitoring equipment, breast pumps for new mothers, and parent beds for those staying with children during surgery.
“Every year we are so surprised and grateful for the effort that Countdown staff put into raising money for us,” Mrs Bland said.
“The fundraising efforts make an astounding difference for children and families on the receiving end of the equipment. We can’t express our gratitude enough.”
Mr Wareham is particularly proud of the efforts of the Waikato Countdown team over the past 6 months.
“Every store in the Waikato managed to raise more funds than the target that was set for them at the start of the campaign. Huntly, Otorohonga and Cambridge Countdown stores were in the top five fundraisers nationally.”
A range of events occurred in the name of Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in the Waikato. Golf days, sausage sizzles, car washes, raffle tickets, quiz nights, calendars, and ‘donate a dollar drives’ saw the money roll in from generous community members.
“We have gone big this year, and our dreams have already begun for the next appeal. I am sure that with the help of our team and local community we will exceed expectations next year too,” Mr Wareham said.
