Release:
It’s official; the Karamea Estuary Walkway is now officially open.
The Karamea Estuary Enhancement Project (KEEP) committee, a Karamea community initiative that began in 2006 to improve access to the estuary and enhance the ecology of the area by planting trees and eliminating pest species, constructed the walkway.
KEEP Chairman George Snowden addressed a gathering of about 80 people in a short speech that covered KEEP story, the Maori and European history and thanked the many people and organisations involved in the project, including; the Department of Conservation, the Buller District Council, International Student Volunteers, Honda Tree Fund, British Oxygen Company and many others.
Mr Snowden went on to mention future plans for the estuary walkway, which included more tree planting with the assistance of GreenFleet, an organisation that provides carbon offsets for companies with vehicle fleets by planting trees, extensions to the walkway and the erection of more information boards.
Students from Karamea Area School prepared food for the ceremony attendees, which included people from Westport, Ngakawau and international visitors from France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and Canada.
