St John National Youth Festival and Competitions Begin!

Media Alert: St John National Youth Festival and Competitions Begin!
25 April 2013

Over 250 attendees from around New Zealand are attending the St John National Youth Festival and Competitions in Auckland.

The annual competitions began Thursday 25 April with an ANZAC Day commemorative service at King’s College Chapel.

Six months of training and dedication is put to the test from tomorrow at the North Shore Events Centre, with communications and drill (marching) competitions.

As the theme is hauora (health and wellbeing), a health expo is also being held at the Events Centre, where Festival participants and members of the public are invited to learn about employment opportunities in the health sector.

Expo exhibitors will include the NZ Army, AUT, Camp America, Camp Quality, UniTec, Youthline and of course St John.
On Saturday 27 April,  the first aid competitions are being held at the iconic Eden Park, and spectators and media are warmly invited to attend (please enter from the Sandringham Road entrance).

Twelve teams (all aged between 15 and 18) from the St John’s Northern, Central and South Island regions will be tested as teams and individuals in first aid, healthcare, leadership, emergency response and team work.

The scenarios are as realistic as possible, using props, make up, and ‘patients’ so that the competitors experience and respond to the situation as if it were a real accident or incident.

Day details for Friday 26 April
Event location: North Shore Event Centre
Time: from 9.00am
Drill will be held in the basketball court area. Communications tests will be held in various locations on site.
The Hauora Youth Expo will be held at Fairway Lodge (behind the Events Centre).

To organise an interview with a St John Festival representative or for general media enquiries about the Festival, please contact Ian Henderson, Communications Advisor, on 0274 362 528 or email ian.henderson@stjohn.org.nz.
