Alternative Transport Funding Just a Political Stunt
According to Councillor Dick Quax, the hype around the alternative funding document for Auckland transport released today is nothing more than a political stunt by Mayor Len Brown to divert Aucklander’s attention away from the Unitary Plan which is also out for discussion and consultation.
“The cynic in me is asks why we would have this debate on alternative funding for Auckland transport projects when the Council is in the midst of engaging the Auckland people on its most important document – the rule book on how and where we will live over the thirty to fifty years.”
“The Unitary Plan is all about directing Aucklanders to live in a more densely populated city. The mayor has stated repeatedly that people “are loving” the idea of a compact city. But, he has avoided the public meetings being held around the region at which people are sending a clear message – they don’t love the idea of living in high rise apartments and want Auckland to maintain its leafy green suburban character.”
“He can see that he is losing the debate on intensification and wants to shift people’s focus to this alternative funding for transport.”
