Wellington needs to match Christchurch’s cycle city commitment
"The Christchurch City Council should be congratulated for listening to the people of Christchurch, and investing in smart, active transport to the tune of $38 million over the next 3 years," Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Paul Bruce said today. "This level of expenditure is also needed in Wellington Region so that we can also provide adequate safe cycling paths along the main arterial routes".
The Christchurch City Council unanimously
approved yesterday the Christchurch Cycle Design Guidelines,
for an extensive network of safe cycleways throughout
Christchurch.

"Cycling infrastructure is 9 times less expensive than car infrastructure, so the business case for walking and cycling is a no brainer. Yet Wellington is still waiting for NZTA funding for safe cycle/walkway between Petone and the Capital, and Wellington city itself has no segregated safe cycle paths", Cr Bruce continued.
"Cities all over the world are investing in smart transport solutions; it makes perfect sense that Christchurch would take up this opportunity. Wellington Region should follow suit", Councillor Paul Bruce concluded.
Wellington City Council held a City Cycle Forum on 1st May in the Council Chambers: http://cyclingwellington.co.nz/2013/04/wellington-city-cycle-forum-1-may-2013/
