Wero is on its way

Wero is on its way

Years of business planning, public debate and visionary support has finally culminated in Auckland Council approving funding for Wero, the white water and cultural centre planned to adjoin the successfully proven Vodafone Events Centre.

The real hard work starts now for Counties Manukau Pacific Trust (CMPT) and the team is chomping at the bit in anticipation of tackling the next stage of development.

Sir Noel Robinson, CMPT chairman is currently overseas but the positive news reached him immediately.

“It’s brilliant to know Auckland Council supports Regional Facilities Auckland (RFA) funding proposal and now we can extensively refine the business plan,” says Sir Noel.

“We’ve promised to deliver a financially sustainable asset for the region and now we’ll invest further energy into ensuring the project fulfils our commitments to the community, and is used and accessible for our community.”

RFA proposed to provide net sale proceeds from the adjacent land sale to CMPT at Manukau to develop Stage Two of the Vodafone Events Centre.

The land sale is expected to provide $20-30 million and Sir Noel says his team is ready to generate the extra $10 million required to get the first step of Stage Two off the ground.

Support from organisations such as Find Your Field of Dreams, Water Safety New Zealand, Auckland Secondary Schools Heads Association and the tourism industry was greatly appreciated by CMPT.

“Numerous individuals, organisations and local iwi have also listened to our plan and backed Wero.

“Without the vision these supporters share for the entire city, we never could have come so far,” Sir Noel says.

Canoe Slalom New Zealand representative, Sue Clarke says now that an international standard facility is becoming a reality we can look forward to welcoming the global paddling community to train and race in New Zealand.

“Kiwi athletes will benefit greatly from a world class, year-round training venue within range of many tertiary and employment options,” says Ms Clarke

“Canoeists from all over the country are now likely to be planning a future that includes studying or working in Auckland.”
