No Deal - Making a Public Stand Against the SkyCity Deal
Press Release
23 June 2013
No Deal
Charlotte Fisher, mum and concerned member of the public is making a public stand this week against the SkyCity convention centre deal.
Ms Fisher will be on the footpath outside SkyCity at lunchtime everyday this week, to show her concern.
Ms Fisher says, "There are many alternatives for running conventions in Auckland, such as the Viaduct Events Centre, Vector Arena, Aotea Centre, Vodafone Events Centre, Auckland Museum events centre and the soon to be built Waterfront Theatre at the viaduct…
Fisher says that Auckland does not need more pokie machines and all of the problems this brings to families and communities.
She is also concerned that the tender process was unfair, and that the deal the Government is making changes exceptions to Gambling Laws, in order for the deal to go ahead.
"The current Government is essentially selling our law to SkyCity, the public have not been consulted about a deal that will affect families, communities and the culture of our city"
Fisher says that this deal means demolishing the TVNZ complex, an asset all New Zealanders own.
