Lots of East Coast fishing spots 'still open, fishing well'

East Coast anglers have been reminded that there are plenty of spots left for some exciting winter trout fishing – even as a number of streams and rivers close this weekend (June 30).

Eastern Fish & Game says that most anglers will be aware that Lake Waikaremoana is open all year. The Aniwaniwa Stream, below the Aniwaniwa falls, at the north-eastern end of the lake also remains open to fishing.

“Although conditions on the lake can be chilly at this time of year there are some huge rewards in terms of splendid scenery, not to mention catching some good fish,” says Fish & Game Officer Mark Sherburn. Recent fishing reports indicate some nice catches around the shoreline, trolling and at stream mouths, he says.

“We’ve also received report of some good catches of well-sized trout at Lake Waikareiti, a steady 45 minute walk four kilometres from Waikaremoana." Mr Sherburn says one fishing party kept a good bag of trout after returning a number of fish under 1.5kg.

“Lake Waikareiti is fishable from aluminium dinghies which can be hired from the Department of Conservation at Aniwaniwa, or you can fish from the shoreline with fly and spin methods. It’s a spectacular place, a real jewel!”

Hawke's Bay

The Mokau and Hopuruahine Streams both tributaries of Lake Waikaremoana, close at the end of June and re open on December 1, 2013. Fish & Game say these streams are closed to allow trout to reproduce successfully and without disturbance.

Mr Sherburn says that the small hydro lakes of Kaitawa and Whakamarino, which add to the angling options for the East Coast, also close for winter – and are fishable again from October 1, 2013.

A fishing spot which is open all year worth trying is Tiniroto Lakes (also known as Kent’s Lake). Stocked annually with 200 rainbow trout Tiniroto provides some great winter sport. Access is via Tiniroto about 3km along Ruakaka Road.
