Bus and Rail could push cars from Golden Mile

Bus and Rail could push cars from Golden Mile

Mark Peck, Labour candidate for the Lambton Ward in this year's City Council Election said today that the spine report quoted in today's DomPost ignored the "elephant in the room" and "failed to look for any innovative solutions to the central cities transport woes".

"How long are the policy makers going to continue with the failed experiment of trying to push buses through upper Willis St and lower Manners St?

This experiment has failed, the planners know it failed and their solution is to reduce the bus stops and remove other vehicles. How original is that? Why should buses go through this route at all. Reverting back to the previous route is the obvious solution, and they know it but are too stubborn to admit it. They continue to try and put a square peg in a round hole, and no matter what they do it will not work.

Buses on this route are routinely empty, noisy and smelly and of no benefit to pedestrians or the businesses trying to eek out a living on this stretch of the CBD.

Mark Peck also questioned why there was no looking at the option of using mini buses through town.

"It seems to me that more use could be made of the hubs at the Railway Station and Courtenay Place. Stop the heavy buses there and passengers can either walk to their destinations or use mini bus transport through town. This is a much more user friendly option and much safer on our narrow city roads.

I must say, I am terribly disappointed that the opportunity to look for innovative solutions was lost in this work. I give them a "c-" and say they must do better", said Mark Peck.
