Stanmore Bay Mural Unveiled

Stanmore Bay Mural Unveiled

The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has hosted the official unveiling of a striking mural, the collective effort of 22 young students under the direction of a local artist.

The artwork adorns the exterior of the Stanmore Bay toilet block in Brightside Road and a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring the artists, proud parents and local politicians, celebrated the achievement.

Stanmore Bay resident, Anna Evans, led the community project. A freelance artist, painter and illustrator, Ms Evans teaches children at "The Art Lab" at Whangaparaoa Community Hall and at other venues throughout the Hibiscus Coast

“I selected the best of my students – ranging in ages from eight year-old Cooper Blomfield to Mia Voudouris (18) to create this mural.

“Using images created by several of my teenage students and me, I produced the final layout by digitally cutting up all our collected artwork and recomposing it into a design that suited the facility,” she said.

The design began last November and the local board gave the go-ahead to begin work on the mural – a pleasant change to past graffiti - in April.

“We spent more than 120 hours on the project from 9am - 6pm everyday during the school holidays and weekends, between April 2 and May 12,” Ms Evans said.

The team effort was recorded via a Google calendar and a Facebook page where people could see the mural in progress.
