Extend your hunting season, urges Fish & Game

The season for all waterfowl has now closed, but there are weeks left to hunt quail and pukeko.

Northland Fish & Game says the region is hosting good populations of quail and pheasants, and there are opportunities to shoot in large forestry blocks throughout the area.

Fish & Game officer Nathan Burkepile says, “We encourage hunters to take advantage of this late season shooting and make time for some enjoyable days chasing pheasants and quail.”

He says that pukeko are abundant throughout Northland and there’s an over-abundance in many areas. “So hunters are urged to target this species as a good way of extending their shooting season.”

Mr Burkepile says that despite many “common myths” about the quality of the meat, pukeko can be quite tasteful as long as it’s prepared properly. “If you don’t care much for the taste, consider processing the meat into salami or sausages.”

The season for Paradise shelduck and black swan closed on July 28, and in parts of the Far North, the pheasant season closes on August 4. However quail and pukeko and pheasant in certain areas can be hunted until August 25.

Mr Burkepile reminds hunters to “check the game bird regulations booklet for information on which species you can hunt, and in which regions after this weekend.”
