Kiwi Climber Killed On K2

Kiwi Climber Killed On K2

Tuesday 24 July.

New Zealand Alpine Club General Manager Sam Newton has acknowledged reports of the death of renowned Kiwi high-altitude climber and guide Marty Schmidt, on the world’s second highest peak, K2.

“We have been aware that Marty – one of NZ’s greatest mountaineers – and his son Denali, have been missing on K2 for 2 days”

“This latest report from K2 base camp, by Adrian Hayes and posted with the agreement of Base Camp Manager Chris Warner, seems to confirm our worst fears.”

“They believe that Marty (53) and his son Denali (25), were killed by an avalanche at Camp 3 (7,400m) on July 26th or 27th”

“More details will emerge in the coming days and tributes to Marty’s extraordinary character and achievements will follow. Right now, our thoughts are with the friends and family who have suffered a tremendous loss.”

Ends.
