Wellingtonians rally in defence of human rights in Egypt
Wellingtonians today rallied outside the Egyptian Embassy in Willeston Street demanding an end to the massacre of protestors in Egypt.
Many passers-by also signed a demand to be delivered to the Egyptian authorities next week. The demand reads:
“We, the undersigned, express our horror and outrage at the massacre of protestors in Egypt by the de facto Egyptian authorities, and demand they immediately cease live fire on protestors.
As UN High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay said yesterday, "The security forces in Egypt are bound by the principle of the rule of law and must exercise their functions in full respect of human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly."”
A candle-light vigil is being planned for Civic Square later in the week, to commemorate those who have died - details to follow.
