The Grand Procession of the Temple

The Grand Procession of the Temple

The Temple for Christchurch, a sculpture of an earthquake built to commemorate the cities three year quake anniversary, will be transported in a grand procession out of the city on Wednesday September 18th to Motukarara Raceway where it will be ceremonially burned on Saturday September 21st as the finale to a fun-filled community event celebrating Christchurch’s future. After standing in the city for 9 days and gathering thousands of written messages on its walls the installation is now being dismantled in preparation to be transported.

The Temple was structurally designed by volunteer engineers from Aurecon so that it could be easily transported. Each section of the installation breaks down into small and easily transported parts that can fit in a truck, trailer or ute.

“The grand procession of the Temple will be a fun way for people to help contribute to our project” said project manager and artist Hippathy Valentine. “With the great engineering solution provided by Aurecon, just about any vehicle with carrying capacity can get involved” he said.

People are invited to bring their work trucks, vehicles and trailers down to the site of the former convention centre at 100 Peterborough St from 3pm to load up and join the procession which will be leaving at 5:30pm.

More information and tickets for the Temple for Christchurch’s burn event can be found at templeforchch.eventbrite.co.nz
