$15M Grant to Connect City to Sea “Music to Our Ears”
Councillor Peter Beck says that the announcement of a $15M grant to connect the city to the sea in the east of Christchurch is “music to our ears”.
Beck is convenor of Eastern Vision a group of influential leaders working for a community-led strategic and spatial plan for the recovery of the east.
He spoke on behalf of the people of the eastern suburbs in response to the announcement from the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal Trust that it has set aside $15M for legacy projects in the east to “connect and leverage engagement with communities”.
“The east of Christchurch includes the most damaged areas of the city. Eastern Vision encourages collaborative conversations, getting everyone around the table. We are here to ensure local people are heard.”
“It is encouraging to see that links with Ngai Tuahuriri and Ngai Tahu are also being established” said Beck.
“Thank you for keeping the control and management of the money within the Trust [rather than passing it onto local or central government to manage] – because you get it, we know that you will ensure the money will be spent according to the community’s wishes.”
“This is not just for the east but about re-connecting the east with the rest of the city. And it's about re-establishing the importance of the Avon River in the heart of the city.” said Beck.
Eastern Vision promotes a pathway for people, place, play and prosperity to thrive in the east. The vision is that the people of the Eastern suburbs lead a master planning process that creates an inspiring, galvanising and practical road map for immediate community regeneration. This will initiate and inform an ambitious long term transformation of the Eastern suburbs into vibrant anchor villages with character that capitalise on the distinctive assets and natural endowments in the district to achieve long term, sustainable, economic, social, cultural and environmental prosperity.
Eastern Vision Steering Group includes Councillor Peter Beck, MP Lianne Dalziel, MP Nicky Wagner, Humphry Rolleston, Evan Smith and Corinne Bolstad.
