Raetihi Oil Spill
Raetihi Oil Spill
Oil Spills can be difficult for small communities like Raetihi.
Oil tanks do fail which is why adequate Secondary Containment or bunding should be around oil tanks so that if storage fails the oil can be trapped for cleanup prior to entering waterways.
In the case of Raetihi, the NZIHSM hope that the people, community and small businesses do not suffer from NO town supply water for long as work is hard in small NZ communities already.
The NZIHSM as the Institute of Hazardous Substance certifiers, designers and enforcers has expressed surprise that the Raetihi oil spill was not trapped at source but are pleased to see that a separate water supply tanker appeared in Raetihi after the oil spill had being realized and cleanup efforts employed.
Whilst he emphasized that oil has many benefits, the NZIHSM President John Hickey stated that he hoped that Raetihi would recover quickly.
Other oil spill examples are the Rena and Gulf Oil spill communities where the environments were still recovering.
