Golf tournament to support Waikids ill and injured children

Waikids registered nurses Sara McConnell and Julia Jensen pose with a signed Argentinian rugby jersey and Chiefs rugby jersey. The items will be auctioned at tomorrow’s 2013 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal golf tournament fundraiser at Ngaruawahia Golf Club.
One lucky bidder will tomorrow (Friday 8 November) take home the signed Waikids jersey Liam Messam wore in May’s big Chiefs vs Crusaders Super Rugby game.
And they will do so all in the name of charity.
The jersey is one of 27 sought-after items to go up for auction at the 2013 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal golf tournament fundraiser at Ngaruawahia Golf Club tomorrow morning.
The tournament marks the final of many 2013 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal fundraisers in the region, all of which have raised money for Waikato DHB’s child and youth health service (Waikids).
“Last year we raised just over $20,000 for Waikids from the golf tournament alone, and of course we are hoping to top that this year,” St James Countdown store manager Haydon Ross said.
Thirty five teams of four will play in the golf tournament. Sponsors, Countdown staff and managers, Waikato DHB employees, Ngaruawahia Golf Club members and many more are involved.
Signed All Blacks jerseys from 2012 and 2013, a full golf bag, Countdown grocery vouchers are some of the items to be auctioned alongside Liam Messam’s signed Waikids jersey.
In total the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal raises money for 10 hospitals nationwide. Last year Waikato raised $144,774 across all its fundraising events and was the top fundraising area in the country.
“Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal is all about getting together as a community and doing what we can to support children who need us. Many of us know families who have used Waikids services and it has been our pleasure to support the cause again this year,” Mr Ross said.
“We put all our heart and soul into fundraising for Waikids. We’d love for Waikato to top the fundraising efforts again this year.”
The bulk of last year’s money went towards sophisticated monitoring equipment, breast pumps for new mothers, and parent beds for those staying with children during surgery. Click here for Waikids’ 2013 wish list.
The Waikato Health Trust is available for those who could not participate in the 2013 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal but still want to donate to Waikids. The trust helps with purchasing priority items for specified parts of the DHB.
The Trust was established in 1993 as the Health Waikato Charitable Trust. Its broad purpose is to support the provision of health and disability services within the area served by the Waikato District Health Board.
