NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 10 November 2013
A weather event looks to have caused a widespread outage at the Hepburn substation in West Auckland last Thursday night. Vector and Transpower crews worked tirelessly through the night to restore power to customers. Most of the power was restored by 8:30pm with the rest brought back on at 11pm that night.
Vector’s Outage Manager App worked overtime during the night with around 23,000 hits.
ELECTRICITY
Onehunga was the scene of two car v pole accidents last week – one in Trafalgar Street on 5 Nov and another at the intersection of Mays Rd and Grey Street, two days later. In West Harbour, a car struck a pillar and urgent work was carried out.
The weekend saw a lift in vehicular incidents with two car v poles in Epsom and South Head and a car v pillar in Greenlane.
Guy Fawkes week brought with it several incidents of buildings and houses on fire. Our crews were called out to isolate the power for safety at addresses in Greenhithe, Auckland’s CBD, Mangere, Waimauku and Manurewa.
Two more house fires over Saturday and Sunday meant Vector crews were called out to addresses in Mangere and Avondale to isolate supply.
GAS
Contractors working in Chatswood struck gas pipes while working in the area and a smell of gas was reported in Devonport. Field crews worked on the faults and repaired pipes.
A third party contractor struck a gas pipe in Flagstaff, Hamilton on Friday morning. Repairs were made by mid-afternoon, however all 500 customers who lost supply, had to be re-lit. This was completed the following day.
PROJECTS
The project to upgrade and reinforce the power supply to one of the country’s biggest hospitals has been successfully completed. More than 2.4 kilometres of 11kV of underground cable has been installed, along with new substation switchgear, distribution substations on the Hospital site and duct to future-proof the data network. This was the final phase of the upgrade project which saw us secure the backup power system at the hospital last year. The hospital now has dedicated primary and backup power supplies from two different substations.
