Speaking out about family violence
Community and government agencies team up to speak out
about family violence
The Hutt Valley will be
buzzing with the anti-violence message in a week of
activities leading up to White Ribbon day on 25
November.
Social service and government agencies come together to plan community events in all parts of the Hutt. Upper Hutt will start week with a Rolling Haka at Orongomae Marae, followed by a Peace Picnic at Wainuiomata Marae, the E Tu Whanau celebration in Petone and the Pomare Community Breakfast.
Deb Robinson, Coordinator Network for Violence-Free Hutt Valley, says "By focusing on the whole family and celebrating what makes them healthy and happy we can get the anti-violence message through.”
"The
community cooperation to come together and organise events
is immense and show the passion people have to stop violence
in our families and communities. It is exciting to see the
passion and amount of White Ribbon activity in the Hutt
Valley region. As a community, we know that family violence
is not okay.”
Celebrating White Ribbon Day is part of
the Safe Hutt Valley initiative which is supported by the
Police, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt Council, ACC, Regional
Public Health, District Health Board, Local Iwi and Ahuru
Mowai O Te Awakairangi, the Network for a Violence Free Hutt
Valley.
White Ribbon Day is celebrated in communities all over New Zealand and is part of White Ribbon an international movement that condemns men’s violence towards women.
