Kai on Queens Returns to Auckland’s Waterfront for Summer
Waterfront Auckland is thrilled to announce Kai on Queens will be returning to Queens Wharf this summer.
Get ready throw on your jandals, loosen your ties and make your way down to Queens Wharf for a bit of sunshine and a bite from the best. Back due to popular demand, Kai on Queens will become a “Friday frequent” this summer with an ever-changing curated selection of fresh and vibrant food vendors, top notch entertainment and more than a handful of board games for the big (and little) kids.
From Friday, 6th December, Queens Wharf will transform into the perfect outdoor eatery from 11:30am – 2:30pm. With a relaxed vibe, this end-of-the-week lunchtime inner city venue will feature a varied and changing array of food vendors, to include The Beverage Boy, MexiKai, Stumpy’s Pizza, The Cool Store and more.
December tunes will include a revolving cast of well-known, local DJs, including Chris Cox, Hudge and Bobby Brazuka. With a raft of free games available, Kai on Queens will offer up everything from swing ball to table tennis, and oversized board games like Connect Four, Scrabble and Jenga. Hustle a group of colleagues or friends together for some banter, a good cheap eat and a play in the sun.
Kai on Queens forms part of a summer programme developed by the Council organisation Waterfront Auckland to activate the public spaces on Queens Wharf for the benefit of the local CBD community and visitors to the area. Now in its second summer Kai on Queens is complimented by ‘Play on Queens’, a series of midweek pop up events including free yoga, drawing classes and mini-festivals.
Queens Wharf Manager Connie Clarkson, from Council organisation, Waterfront Auckland says she’s looking forward to a second summer of Kai on Queens and is expecting it to be bigger and better than the last.
“Queens Wharf is the landing point into the city. It is a space for many things – to eat, to play, to breathe and think. Kai on Queens celebrates summer in the city, enabling people to kick of their shoes, plays some games and enjoy lunch at the water’s edge.”
Without further ado, here are some great facts on the Kai on Queens food vendors for December:
MexiKai cook their pork to perfection over 20 hours and their truck was designed by a NZ documentary film-maker in 2011. With a semi-permanent home on Elliot Street, these Mexico maestros make their way around the country to the biggest festivals, weddings and corporate feasts a-plenty.
Stumpy's Pizza is set up by a pizza-legend, Andy often known as Stumpy. All of the trucks are purpose-built as pizza ovens and can set up almost anywhere. Down the road in Silo Park, Stumpy’s are known for whipping up over 200 pizza’s a night. Every part of the pizza is made from scratch, just how you like it.
The Beverage Boy was set up and operated by Matt Lockwood, a V8 race car driver from Palmerston North. Smoothies are their speciality, and Matt is constantly inspired to share his passion for clean, green, delicious ingredients in a fast format for a wide audience.
The Cool Store is run by a couple of extra-cool kids, Calvin Humby and Lucy Taggart. With the Italian’s in mind, they sell the best gelato in the southern-hemisphere (no joke) and have an ever-increasing range of flavours, including the delicious Cappuccino with cinnamon.
Queens Wharf lies at the foot of the Auckland CBD and is by far the best place to enjoy your lunch in the sun, overlooking the sparkling Waitemata Harbour. Queens Wharf is a public space for everyone to enjoy and Kai on Queens is one of many fantastic events on offer.
Watch this space as Kai on Queens announce further markets for January and March this summer.
