Minister of Broadcasting to Announce Supreme Award At New Zealand Captioning Awards 2013

The Captioning Working Group, with membership from Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand, The Hearing Association New Zealand and The National Foundation for the Deaf are proud to announce that the New Zealand Captioning Awards 2013 are being held this Friday, 29th November, at the Langham Hotel in Auckland.

The captioning of television, public service broadcasts, movies and the internet are integral communication links for the one in six or over 700,000 New Zealanders who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired.

The New Zealand Captioning Awards will publicly acknowledge both individuals and organisations that have significantly contributed to the improvement of captioning across all media during 2013.

New Zealand’s rate of captioning is very low compared with Australia, the UK and the USA and the Awards are an excellent opportunity to profile positive steps in the right direction and highlight the need to do more.

The Hon. Craig Foss Minister for Broadcasting will award the Supreme Award winner; Hon. Tariana Turia, Minister for Disability Issues, will be presenting both the 2013 Individual Captioning Award and the 2013 Telecommunications and Internet Award and Jane Wrightson, CEO New Zealand On Air will be presenting the 2013 Broadcasting Captioning Award.

Also attending the Awards will be Mojo Mathers and the Hon Ruth Dyson, along with Dr Paul Hutchison.

All award winners will be announced to the public after the Awards ceremony on Friday, 29th November.
