Countdown Presents Waikids with $122,088 for Sick
Kids
Waikids
(Waikato DHB’s child and youth health service) will soon
benefit from $122,088 worth of new hospital equipment thanks
to the diligent fundraising efforts of the 2013 Countdown
Kids Hospital Appeal.
The generous donation was presented to Waikids staff today (Thursday 28 November) following Countdown’s annual national fundraiser, which ran from 5 August to 27 October 2013. The Appeal raises money for much-needed equipment at 10 dedicated children’s areas at hospitals around New Zealand.
This year, hundreds of local events took place across the country, culminating in a record $1.22 million raised nationwide.
The money donated to Waikids this year will
primarily go towards sophisticated monitoring equipment,
tilt-away beds, baby scales, and recliner chairs for new
mums.
Waikids unit manager Lorraine Reid said
every year the DHB is so surprised and grateful for the
effort that Countdown staff put into raising money for
Waikids.
“The fundraising efforts make an astounding
difference for children and families on the receiving end of
the equipment. We can’t express our gratitude enough,”
she said.
A range of events occurred in the name of
Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in the Waikato. Sausage
sizzles, car washes, raffle tickets, quiz nights, calendars,
and ‘donate a dollar drives’ saw the money roll in from
generous community members.
The final fundraiser in the
region was the popular golf tournament at Ngaruawahia Golf
Club. Thirty five teams of four, including Countdown staff
and managers, sponsors, and three Waikato DHB teams,
competed against one another to raise thousands of dollars
for Waikids.
Countdown area manager Karl Wareham said the goal each year is to raise as much money as possible to help sick children around New Zealand.
“This is part of our commitment to giving back to the communities that we live and work in, and supporting good causes that make life better for Kiwis.
“We are so proud of the generosity of Countdown customers, our team, and our suppliers. It’s through these networks that this year’s activities have helped us raise such a large amount of money to help children admitted into the care of their local hospitals.”
The Appeal was previously known as the Fresh Future Children’s Hospital Appeal, and has raised more than $5.7 million for 10 children’s areas throughout New Zealand. More than $700,000 of that has gone to Waikato Hospital.
The money donated will be put into a specific Waikids account within the Waikato Health Trust. The trust helps with purchasing priority items for specified parts of the DHB.
The Trust was
established in 1993 as the Health Waikato Charitable Trust.
Its broad purpose is to support the provision of health and
disability services within the area served by the Waikato
District Health Board.
