Mayor welcomes government backing for $6.1 million cycle route
Mayor Len Brown today welcomed the government’s support for Auckland Council’s proposed 5.5km cycle route alongside Dominion Road. NZTA has today agreed to fund half of the $6.1 million dedicated cycle route that will run parallel to Dominion Road.
“It is fantastic to see the government backing Auckland’s vision to create a more cycle-friendly city,” Len Brown said. “Improving our cycle network is a key focus for Auckland Council and an area we intend to put a great deal more focus in the coming months.
“I want to acknowledge Councillors Christine Fletcher and Cathy Casey, and in particular the local boards, who have been closely involved in this project."
Cr Christine Fletcher, who is also a member of the Auckland Transport Board, said “I welcome the government’s support for this project, which will offer cyclists a safe and convenient commuter route, separate from the buses and heavy traffic using Dominion Road.”
The Mayor has pledged to work with cycling and walking groups and Councillors to develop a new ‘Active Transport Plan’ for Auckland, as part of the Council’s long-term plan review this year.
