Health warnings lifted for Lake Rotoehu and Lake Rotoiti

The algal bloom health warnings previously issued for Lake Rotoehu and for Okawa Bay and Okere Arm on Lake Rotoiti have been lifted. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Neil de Wet says “results of water testing by Bay of Plenty Regional Council confirm that the algal blooms have subsided in both these lakes.”

Despite the lifting of the warning Dr de Wet advises that the public should always be vigilant for signs of algal blooms if using lakes. “Algal blooms can develop rapidly and unpredictably and can sometimes produce toxins that are harmful for people as well as animals. If the water looks discoloured, has an unusual smell, or has green or brown particles suspended in it then it is best to avoid contact with it.”
