Old Truckers to Get Out of Retirement for One Day

Press - 17/09/2014 for immediate release

“Old Truckers to Get Out of Retirement for One Day to Turn Out for Trucking 2014”

Saturday October 11th 2014 at Wigram Air Force Museum ONE DAY ONLY

Out of retirement for a day to help out at the Tyre General GT Radial Trucking 2014. As the wheels roll from all over NZ to converge in Christchurch. The old truckers will be getting ready to be our ambassadors for the day. They will be on hand to answer any questions and will be delighted to share their stories.

Life members of the Road Transport Association NZ and NZ Trucking Association shows the commitment to the industry and so when they heard a party was happening in town that involved hundreds of trucks, they put their hands up to volunteer.

“It’s going to be amazing having the old truckers involved to mix with the crowd, collect the donations, and answer any questions. Their transport experiences need to be shared and what better place than a grand show likes this” said Carol McGeady - Executive officer at NZ Trucking Association.

Over 80 trade displays will be showing off the latest in Technology, Supplies, and Services in the stunning event hall at Wigram Air Force Museum. Step outside onto the Tarmac and it’s all about Trucks. From the Big Rigs that roll up and down the country side to the Vintage Trucks which have been restored lovingly to original conditions and everything in between.

Real life working displays including cranes, trailers, and a logging truck which is going to be loading and unloading logs.

The stars of the show are the drivers, the hardworking truckers who are driving their rigs to the show and will line them up (in a straight line) along the tarmac, over 250 so far but we are hoping to exceed that number and make this the biggest show & shine ever. The show & shine is all about real life working trucks and is a celebration of the skill that is required to drive these rigs.

We are using this event to highlight the qualifications and career opportunities in the industry. The NEW “Road Transport Career HUB” is a dedicated area that includes all the career agencies, companies that provide driver training and companies who are looking to recruit including the newly formed initiative WiRT (Women in Road Transport). Companies can post on the employment towers “situations vacant” and public can post “situations wanted” for FREE.

Promoting a safe way for cycles and trucks to share the road, the Cycle Safety people are on hand with a practical demonstration where the cyclists can actually get into a truck and see what the truckie’s see and the truckie’s can ride a bike around the truck to see what the cyclists sees. Getting the two together to understand each other’s issues will save lives.

Free blood pressure checks from Canterbury Rural Health are a way they can engage with the truckies to encourage them to review their health regularly.

Mini Convoy – Friday 10th October, the day before the show a mini convoy of trucks are picking up children from Ronald McDonald house and Child Cancer and taking them for a ride. A collection of various trucks including a tanker, dump truck, line haul truck, vintage truck and more.

Public Entry is minimum Gold Coin donation and all proceeds are going to our two charities for the day Ronald McDonald House and Child Cancer Canterbury. A charity auction will also be held at the dinner that rounds off the day.

Saturday 11th October 2014 10am – 5pm ONE DAY ONLY

Gordon Campbell: On That $4 Billion Hit To National’s Economic Cred

National released its economic and tax policy last Friday. Weirdly, the plan was announced right at the end of the news week, when whatever impact it managed to generate would be likely to dissipate over the weekend. Well…. that now seems all for the best. The plan is now known to have a $4 billion hole in it. Apparently, National used outdated figures for the amount it stood to save from NOT paying into the Super Fund. Amusingly, the $4 billion mistake was almost exactly the same size as the $4.7 billion that National still promises to give away in tax cuts... More>>
