Auckland Transport Board Get Cold Feet Over ‘Bridge to Nowhere’
Auckland Transport’s (AT) Board have got cold feet over the controversial ‘bridge to no-where’ in Newmarket, deferring a decision yet again despite relentless pressure from AT management say local Cowie Street Residents Association.
“Yet again AT has tried to rail-road a decision through their board at the expense of the views of local residents,” says William Carson, a Cowie Street resident.
“It’s clear now that there is a big split between the Board of AT who recognise the strong opposition to AT’s plan to build a $8m taxpayer funded-bridge and AT’s management who are desperately trying to find ways to dismiss a $5.7m underpass option preferred by local residents.”
“Not only is AT’s management trying to steam-roll its board into a decision, they are also ignoring an Auckland Council Infrastructure Committee Resolution that ‘urged AT to give serious consideration to what appears to be a more cost-effective, environmentally less intrusive solution’ and ‘to continue its consultation with the Waitemata Local Board and Infrastructure Committee over its decision regarding the underpass’.
“We call on AT’s Board to pull AT’s management into line and tell them that the bridge is no longer on the table,” said Mr Carson.
