Whanganui in Chinese

Whanganui’s main tourism and promotional website, WhanganuiNZ.com, now features a page in Chinese. Visiting the website there is a button on the home page that takes a Chinese visitor straight to the translated page.

The page features Whanganui’s key attractions and establishes the district and city as home to some of New Zealand’s most fascinating history and arts. Lyn Cheyne, Promotion and Marketing Manager, says that the Chinese are often interested in things that are rare or “first’s”. “For this reason we’ve mentioned our early sporting history such as having New Zealand’s first Jockey Club and New Zealand’s first Golf Club as well as our unique heritage attractions the PS Waimarie, Durie Elevator and Whanganui Regional Museum”.

Translated by Fongyee Walker of Dragon Phoenix Consulting in Beijing, the page also mentions an unusual Whanganui connection to China – the Nankeen Night Heron is a rare bird only found in New Zealand along the Whanganui River. The bird’s name refers to the colouring similar to cotton found originally around the Chinese city of Nanjing.
