Hundreds enjoy Thackwood Garden, raising money for local trust

North Nelson’s Thackwood Garden, nestled in a fourth generation, 300 acre Farm, in Wakapuaka raised over $2000 when it opened to the public today as a fundraiser for the Nelson Regional Breast & Gynaecological Cancer Trust.

Last year, Thackwood Garden earned the accolade of “Garden of National Significance” from the New Zealand Gardens Trust, placing it in the same category as both Auckland Botanic Gardens and the Government House Gardens in Wellington.

Owners, Karen and Murray Gill welcomed the public through the gates of their garden, between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. Many of who stayed to enjoy a picnic on the lawn on a perfect Nelson summer’s day.

Mr. Gill, who is a life and health insurance broker says, “It was a very special day, we love to share our garden”. He continues, “I have several clients and acquaintances who have been affected by breast cancer, so we’re particularly pleased to be able to support this local charity”.

Nelson Regional Breast & Gynaecological Cancer Trust trustee, Kim Proctor-Western says, we are so grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Gill for supporting the trust, and everybody who came along to visit their garden. The patronage we receive from local people who go out of their way to raise money on our behalf is quite phenomenal, the trust wouldn’t continue to operate without this kindness and generosity”.

Thackwood Garden is open to the public at other times throughout the year, by appointment only.
