Police and UnisonFibre Connecting Local Community

Monday 24 November - Two Maraenui primary schools will go head-to-head on the basketball court this week, as part of a community initiative supported by UnisonFibre and local Police.

The ‘Nui Street Ball’ event, organised by the Maraenui Police, aims to bring the local community together.

Police Constable, Hoki Ward, said last year’s inaugural challenge was a great success, so making it an annual event was an easy decision.

“The kids had a ball last year. We set out to boost team spirit and morale within the community, and that was certainly achieved on the day.

“It’s all about supporting the kids of Maraenui and encouraging them to get involved with sport; it builds on the great relationship between Police and the local community.”

UnisonFibre General Manager, Mike McGarvey said the Company shared the view of Maraenui Police around the importance of strengthening community relationships.

“We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of last year’s event and seeing the positive impact it had on the community.

“We bring along Powerman and a range of give-aways, which the kids just love. It’s great to be able to give something back to help our region prosper.”

Teams of Year 6 students from Maraenui and Richmond primary schools will play four-on-four in the car park at Maraenui shopping centre, this Friday 28 November, from 9.30am until 12pm.

UnisonFibre will host an after-match BBQ.

“Maraenui is a really neat little community and it’s nice to be able to showcase that,” said Mr McGarvey.
