Car V Train near Te Teko, Bay of Plenty

The Rotorua based BayTrust Rescue helicopter was dispatched to Te Teko, Bay of Plenty today at 1pm to attend the scene of car colliding with a log train. The train driver was able to put out an emergency call with a GPS location.

There was a response from all the emergency services, however the accident occurred on a remote section of railway line making vehicle access difficult. The scene was not accurately located until the rescue helicopter was over head and able to pinpoint the location.

The helicopter was able straddle the railway lines and land on the tracks about 150 meters away from the train.

Upon landing it was discovered that the vehicle was abandoned and there was nobody in the ute at the time it was hit by the train.

Please contact Whakatane Police for any additional information.

Philips Search and Rescue Trust is a charitable organisation, operating rescue helicopters throughout the Central North Island. Philips Search and Rescue Trust relies on support from principal sponsors and community donations.

Special thanks to Rotorua's principal sponsor, BayTrust. This crucial financial support ensures our rescue helicopters can continue to bring life-saving equipment, rescue personnel and trauma-trained medics directly to the patient.
