Go by Bike Day reinforces national road safety message
Hutt City Council is holding a Go by Bike Day
Breakfast on Wednesday 18 February, at The Dowse Art Museum,
to celebrate Bike Wise Month.
Go by Bike Day encourages residents from across the city to ride their bike to work or school and enjoy a free breakfast, giveaways and safety tips.
The event is set to take place from 7-9am and is part of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s national Share the Road campaign, which aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the road.
Attendees will have the chance to be part of the safety campaign by getting their photo taken with their bike in a fun photobooth.
Participants will choose a word that describes them – for example, student, Uncle, nurse, IT guy, barista – and have it digitally imposed on their T-shirt in the image.
“The event celebrates those who cycle regularly and encourages others to give it a go”, says Hutt City Council’s Road Safety Coordinator Jan Simmons.
“We’ll be sharing safety messages with cyclists about wearing high visibility clothing, keeping to the road rules, and wearing a helmet. We’ll also be encouraging the less confident cyclists to attend a Pedal Ready skills workshop.
“It’s also a good reminder for drivers to be considerate when sharing the road with cyclists. Checking carefully for cyclists at intersections and roundabouts, and slowing down when passing cyclists, are two simple actions drivers can take to reduce the risk of a crash.”
