By-election candidate facing charges

A candidate in the Northland by-election, Maki Herbert, is facing charges after police found cannabis plants growing on her property.

Ms Herbert, who is representing the Cannabis Party, is likely to face the prospect of jail if convicted.

"My message to voters is to stop voting for parties that want to lock us up in prison," she said.

"I'm standing in this election so voters can choose an alternative to prohibition."

The by-election will be held on March 28.
