Hastings City Growers Market Moves Home

Hastings City Growers Market Moves Home

As of Saturday 21st March the Hastings City Growers Market has a new home in the central Mall area of Hastings by the Fountain. Open from 8am until 12pm each Saturday Morning, the emphasis of this bustling market is on fresh, affordable and diverse produce direct from the grower or maker.

Following on from the huge success of the Night Market - a fabulous community event bringing the people of Hastings into CBD each Thursday night - the Growers Market was launched in November in Heretaunga St East. The market has now been moved into a more central position in Hastings to gain more foot traffic from locals already coming in to Hastings to shop, and provide a wider audience to the market. The new location has also meant that no road closure is required.

The first market in the new location on Saturday saw many new visitors to the market, as well as regulars, and the centre of Hastings became a hub of activity with a real community vibe. Part of the markets objective is to encourage families and friends to come into Hastings on a Saturday to shop and meet up for a coffee or lunch as a regular routine. Susan McDade from Hastings City Business Association, who run the market, said “The first Growers Market in its new home was a real success – the leafy boulevards, fountain and grassy areas add a relaxing ambience to a lively town centre market. There was a lovely atmosphere for shoppers to enjoy and we are excited about how it will develop.”

The Market’s stallholders range from small growers with a single seasonal product, such as avocado’s, to larger farmers with a well-stocked variety of fruit and vegetables. In addition to fresh fruit and veg, the market boasts other producers such as ‘Taste of Africa’ who produce amazing sausages (some ready to eat) and Aunty’s Garden, selling their herbs, vegetables and freshly made and delicious pesto, aoili and lemon curd with many more artisan products coming on board over the coming weeks.
