Auckland Council in Breach of Local Electoral Act
Auckland Council in Breach of Local Electoral Act
TUESDAY 5 MAY 2015
The Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance has discovered that Auckland Council is in breach of the Local Electoral Act 2001, and is not making electronic copies of candidates’ donation and expense returns publicly available.
Ratepayers’ Alliance Spokesperson, Jo Holmes, says:
“Auckland Council are required by law to ensure that candidates’ donations and expenses returns are freely available for public scrutiny. Go onto their website, they’re not on there. Go into the Council, they don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Transparency of expenses and donations returns ensures that our elected officials are not above scrutiny by ratepayers.”
“We understand that this is an oversight, but with the previous shenanigans of secret trusts, hidden donors and court cases, Auckland Council should be promoting transparency, not making electors jump through hoops to get information the Council is obliged to be open about.”
