South Auckland environmental charity wins prestigious award

A South Auckland charity has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s environmental leaders in the 25th annual Green Ribbon Awards.

The Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust (MBCT) was honoured with the Community Leadership award at the 2015 Green Ribbon Awards in Parliament yesterday (4 June). The award recognises the charity’s outstanding leadership in empowering the South Auckland community to take action for the environment.

Open to all individuals and organisations in New Zealand who make a difference for our environment, The Green Ribbon Awards recognise the initiative, dedication and sheer hard work individuals, communities and businesses put into caring for our part of the world.

MBCT exemplifies ‘community leadership’ through its diverse range of practical environmental programmes and services, and unique education initiatives – with the common aim of protecting, enhancing and beautifying the South Auckland environment.

As the leader in its field for graffiti management, MBCT manages a 24/7 graffiti removal team, responsible for removing graffiti from public areas throughout the South Auckland region. The Trust’s twenty two employees also work closely with schools, community groups, local businesses and individuals on a number of environmental initiatives including mural painting and town centre clean-ups. Pivotal to the Trusts’ work is community engagement and involvement – to date, they have successfully mobilised a group of 500 volunteers, who have gifted 21,793 hours back to community over an 18 month timeframe.

The Trust is also a highly committed environmental educator for a number of programmes, events and projects that enhance and beautify the South Auckland area. Its award-winning annual environmental education event, Eye on Nature, aims to encourage young people to become custodians of the environment for the future by giving them a unique hands-on experience, in partnership with leading environmental organisations.

Graeme Bakker, Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust GM, was thrilled to accept the prestigious award from The Minister for the Environment and Minister of Conservation, on behalf of the Trust.

“Being honoured with a Green Ribbon Award for community leadership is a highlight for the Trust and is a great endorsement for the work we are doing. It will help shine the spotlight on the South Auckland region for all the right reasons, demonstrating that good things happen when communities work together to beautify, protect and enrich the environment,” says Mr Bakker.

MBCT continues to explore other innovative projects to enhance the local community. In February 2015, the Trust opened a community shed at its Manurewa headquarters for a new initiative, ‘Boomer Business’. This is a community space where men and women aged 50+ years can socialise and give back to their community through workshop, engineering and crafts skills that add benefit to a mix of community projects or their own personal projects.
