Big response to help clean beach
Small amounts of new oil have washed up at Himatangi Beach overnight, with 90 people gathered to continue the clean-up effort this morning.
Horizons on-scene commander Ian Lowe says today will run much like yesterday, with clean-up crews removing oil from the beach in sections along the 8km left to clean.
“We’re aiming to clear all the larger patches of oil today before combing the beach again.
“Further information will be issued should the situation change but for now all efforts are focused on getting the beach cleaned up as quickly as possible and returning it to the community. We’re really thankful to all the people helping with this work,” he says.
Himatangi and Foxton Beach remained closed to vehicle access while the clean-up is underway and people are being urged to stay off the beaches.
