ABHB welcomes poll date
18 June 2015
A Better Hawke’s Bay has welcomed the announcement by the Local Government Commission that the poll on amalgamation of the five Hawke’s Bay Councils will take place on 15 September.
“This means that we can now focus on the benefits a single Hawke’s Bay Council will bring. Amalgamation will give Hawke’s Bay the kick start we so desperately need. Currently we are at the wrong end of all the statistics and mired by constant infighting – we have not made any progress for decades and something must change” said Rebecca Turner Chairman of a Better Hawke’s Bay.
“A Better Hawke’s Bay has always believed that such a big decision should go to a referendum to ensure the new council has the mandate it will need. That is why we triggered the poll by getting affected Rangitikei residents to sign a petition last week.
“We will run a positive campaign explaining the benefits of amalgamation and how Hawke’s Bay can move forward.” Ms Turner said.
