Courtesy crossing awareness
Horizons Regional Council, Police and Palmerston North City Council will conduct a joint operation to promote the safe use of courtesy crossings on Tuesday 23 June.
Horizons’ road safety coordinator for Palmerston North, Desley Monks says it’s important that people understand the law around these crossings.
“Our aim is to give out information and talk to people around the purpose of a courtesy crossing, how it differs from a pedestrian crossing, and what is safe behaviour from both pedestrians and drivers,” Mrs Monks says.
“People often walk out without looking when using a courtesy crossing expecting traffic to stop for them.
While there is no legal requirement for drivers to stop at a courtesy crossing , it is an accepted courtesy that they should.”
“At the same time pedestrians should always check before crossing to ensure it is safe to do so.”
“This message is especially important for children who are used to using a monitored crossing outside school.”
The operation will begin at 11.30am by the courtesy crossing on Broadway, outside of the Trade Aid, and run till 1pm.
