Southlanders should prepare for snow

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the lower South Island with snow showers expected today (Monday) through to Wednesday.

A wintry blast is likely to affect southern Fiordland, Southland and Clutha, where 20 – 40cm is expected to accumulate above 100 metres.

Sandra Miller, Acting Manager for Emergency Management Southland said motorists need to take particular care and check road conditions before travelling. “The roads are probably going to be pretty treacherous and people should consider whether they really need to travel at all. While the snow may not settle in many places, people are better to be cautious when making their plans for the next few days.”

Snow showers are expected to become heavier and more persistent tonight (Monday), through to Tuesday night, so farmers may wish to consider shelter for any vulnerable animals.

“As well as considering your travel and transport plans, we’d also encourage you to check on your neighbours. Now is also a good time to stock up on your emergency supplies,” Sandra says.

Emergency Management Southland will continue to monitor the situation, as will the Emergency Services.
