Joint forces stop $80 million methamphetamine

A joint operation between New Zealand Customs, Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority and Australian Federal Police has stopped approximately 80 kilograms of methamphetamine from reaching its final destination.
In July, a sea container sent from South America to Fiji was intercepted and examined by Customs at the Ports of Auckland. Approximately 80 kilograms of methamphetamine, with a potential street value of around NZD $80 million, was found hidden inside car parts.
Enquiries undertaken by Fijian authorities resulted in a Fijian national being arrested.
Customs Investigations Manager Maurice O’Brien says this is a great example of international law enforcement agencies working together to target the illicit drug trade, and jointly protect borders and communities in the South Pacific region.
“It is very satisfying to play a part in this operation and stop this large amount of methamphetamine making it onto the streets.
“Sophisticated criminal syndicates set up drug supply chains across countries and take big risks for big profits. We’re pleased this significant seizure will hit them hard in the pocket.”
