Karori supports its Event Centre

Karori supports its Event Centre

Karori retailers, businesses and organisation are showing strong support for the Karori Event Centre project. The Karori Event Centre will be the only public community hall in Karori. It will be a multi-purpose facility and cater for Karori and the surrounding Western Suburbs community.

Karori Community Hall Trustees Kelvin Giles and Wallace Simmers gratefully accepted donations of around $1,000 each from Penny Hocking (Penny’s Deli) and Andrew Summerville (Karori New World). Ms Hocking and her family and friends got together to make their contribution. “We need the Karori Event Centre, the space for activities and events, and for people to connect” said Ms Hocking, “As local businesses we survive and thrive when our community is strong. We wanted to contribute to this project to do something positive, to foster community spirit and by giving the community something in return for their support of us”.

Business initiatives to raise funds for the Karori Event Centre recently included a donate a dollar campaign, run by New World Karori and BP, and the Lions Club of Karori has also donated $6,400; the proceeds of their Karori Karnival earlier this year.

Mr Summerville, owner of Karori New World, stated that many customers donated a dollar with their purchase through the promotion run in-store, demonstrating the Kaori community is rallying behind the project.

The Karori Community Hall Trust aims to start building later this year. It has raised over 1 million dollars from grants and the community. The Wellington City Council is contributing $310,000 and the proceeds from the sale of the St Johns Hall land, which together should equate to around another million dollars. The construction cost of the Karori Event Centre is $2.4m, and the Trust is hoping to raise the remaining $400,000 over the next few months. “This is the time to make your donation, so we can start building this year and make the Karori Event Centre a reality” says Trustee Kelvin Giles.
