Soil Doco to Prompt Discussion
As 2015 is the International Year of Soils, a movie and
discussion event has been organised by Hawke’s Bay
Regional Council to increase awareness of soil issues in the
community.
The HBRC Land Management team will screen the documentary ‘Symphony of the Soil’ at MTG Cinema Gold on Tuesday 25 August, 6 pm to 8 pm.
The screening will be followed by pizza and a discussion about some of the issues raised in the documentary and how these relate to Hawke’s Bay. Entry is by gold coin donation or koha.
“This documentary will interest landowners, students and city people with gardens or an interest in our region’s landscape,” says Brendan Powell, HBRC Catchment Management Team Leader.
“Hawke’s Bay has issues with soil quality that are common to other parts of the world, so the international focus of this documentary is a good way to prompt new thinking and discussion about what is happening locally,” he says.
“Symphony of the Soil” by documentary maker Deborah Koons Garcia takes an innovative approach to telling the story of soil, drawing from both ancient knowledge and cutting edge science.
The aim of the film is to increase understanding of the elaborate relationships between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants and animals, and a better appreciation of the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource.
The documentary also examines the human relationship with soil, the use and misuse of soil in agriculture, deforestation and development, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in ameliorating the most challenging environmental issues of our time.
