Customs arrest Christchurch man for importing drugs

A 43-year-old Christchurch man has been arrested by Customs today, and charged with 15 drug related offences.

An investigation was launched after officers intercepted drugs, destined for a Christchurch address, at the Auckland International Mail Centre.

Customs’ investigators, with assistance from Christchurch Police, executed a search warrant at a Spreydon address this morning where the man resided.

During the search officers located a small but sophisticated cannabis grow in a wardrobe, a small amount of methamphetamine, some dried cannabis, and methamphetamine and cannabis utensils.

Customs Investigation Manager, Maurice O’Brien says this is a very good success for our Christchurch based investigations unit who have acted promptly to identify the person involved in the importations and capture evidence.

The man has been charged with 8 counts of Importing Class A drugs (methamphetamine and heroin), 4 counts of Importing Class B drugs (MDMA powder and pills), Cultivating cannabis, Possession of Class A drugs, Possession of Class C drugs, and Possession of drug utensils.

The accused man is currently in custody and will appear in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon.
