Auditor-General’s report on Queenstown Lakes Council
Auditor-General’s report on Queenstown Lakes District Council published
In May 2015, the Auditor-General announced an inquiry into how the Queenstown Lakes District Council (the Council) and its chief executive, Mr Adam Feeley, have managed the chief executive’s interest in land owned by his family being considered for a special housing area.
We found that the chief executive’s involvement did not influence or contribute to any substantive aspects of the Council’s policy for special housing areas. The Mayor and Council took appropriate steps to manage the conflict of interest. The chief executive took no part in recommendations or decisions about special housing areas after declaring his interest.
We also found that the conflict affected the chief executive’s ability to advise the Council about special housing areas and provide leadership to council staff in this area. Senior local authority employees should carefully consider the effect of pursuing private interests where that might create a conflict with their ability to perform their job.
