Bonanza at Playcentre House
Bonanza at Playcentre House
Paekākāriki Playcentre House has been hard fought for. In 1974 the government planned to demolish the late nineteenth-century character home on the corner of Wellington Road. However, a group of staunch Paekākāriki women had alternative plans to convert the building into a community-run early childhood centre. They took up the fight to restore the “once gracious old house”, arguing that it was an icon, and one of the first houses to be built in Paekākāriki. The women wrote numerous letters, called on a Government Minister, and made their case in the local paper - the Kapiti Observer. They held a Gala Day to pay for renovations.
Some 41 years later and Playcentre House is in need of some tender loving care. Not much has changed, as the current group of parents is holding a Bonanza to raise funds to restore the grand old house. The group has recently replaced its distinctive red 70s retro lino with more modern vinyl. But the old house still needs work, some boards need replacing and it could do with a good lick of paint.
Current President, Simon Hay, said “As part of their fundraising efforts, and in recognition of its history, some parents have made crafts with the old red lino. The mementos will be for sale at this Saturday's Bonanza. Many families will have fond memories of babies taking their first steps on this lino, of playing close to the ground and of the pride we have in keeping the place polished.”
“This year's Bonanza offers many special treats, we have a great line-up of local musicians including Holly Ewens, front woman for Rosy Tin Teacaddy, and Al Witham, who is a well-known blues baritone. The stage will be on the villa's veranda and entertainment will run from 10am until 2pm. We will have a bouncy castle, face paint, a massive Jumble Sale and hot food on offer.”
Mr Hay added “Our fight for Playcentre continues. To revive and thrive as a community, we need to recognise and honour the past. Unfortunately, current Government policy is not helping, as it favours the corporatisation of early childcare centres and parent collectives like ours are left to fend for ourselves.”
“That is why we have created a Givealittle page for our building. If you would like to donate please go to:https://givealittle.co.nz/org/paekakarikiplaycentre/# ”
Everyone is welcome to the Paekākāriki Playcentre Bonanza, Saturday the 7th of November, 10am – 2pm, 22 Wellington Road, Paekākāriki.
