Housing New Zealand opens doors to summer safety house

Housing New Zealand is coming together with a number of community groups to hold a free ‘summer safety’ themed event at a state house in Naenae next weekend.

The event is being held at 17 Sladden Street, from 10.30am to 3pm, on 28 and 29 November.

The house will be the venue for a ‘Summer Safety House’ for the weekend, with plenty of fun activities for all the family, including safety demonstrations and a range of tips and information for the community about how to keep safe over summer.

The inaugural event is a joint initiative with the New Zealand Fire Service, Hutt City Council, Safekids Aotearoa, Water Safety NZ, Sunsmart and NZ Police.

Jackie Pivac, Housing New Zealand Regional Manager, says it’s about bringing the safety message to life in a way that captures people’s attention.

“We want our tenants and the wider community to keep safe over summer so we will be highlighting some areas which can be a cause of injury at this time of year.

“Some of the summer safety messages on the day will include keeping fire safe, paddling pool safety, driveway safety, being sun smart and home security tips by NZ Police for those going away over Christmas,” Ms Pivac says.

“The New Zealand Fire Service will be holding a kitchen fire demonstration and our partner in driveway safety, Safekids Aotearoa, are demonstrating driveway mats to help bring these important messages to life.”

On the day there will also be a free BBQ, entertainment, kids colouring competition, a ‘safety tips’ competition for grown ups and giveaways.

“It’s going to be a fun day for the whole family and a great way to actively educate everyone about how they can stay safe in the home over summer,” Ms Pivac says.

The event is part of a wider summer safety campaign which will see the latest edition of the Housing New Zealand newsletter to tenants - Close to Home – themed the ‘summer safety edition’.
